James spent most of his working years in the contracting and home improvement trade and also worked as a brick layer. In his later years he worked as a maintenance technician for Elite Spice Company. In his leisure he liked to spend time out doors and enjoyed fishing as well as NASCAR and watching the Discovery Channel on television. He was also fond of enjoying "a few cold ones."
Surviving him are his daughter Danielle Sprouse and husband David, and son Randy and wife Kerin Taylor. He leaves a sister Diane Loudermilk and joins in passing his sister Sandy Taylor.
